ÖTW TOUR DE VIN: 30 Years Celebration

Thirty years have passed since winemaker Peter Dolle first conceived the idea for the TOUR DE VIN in Austria.

Now, as we look back on this milestone anniversary, we reminisce on the memories made and the flavors savored during this iconic celebration of Austrian wines.

The Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (ÖTW), founded in 1992 and headquartered in Krems an der Donau, brings together like-minded viticulturists who share a common goal: to express the distinctive characteristics of their regions, soils, climates, grape varieties, and cellars in the wines they craft. The member estates cultivate the historical vineyards in the valley landscape of the northeastern Danube region, encompassing the appellations of Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, and Wagram, as well as along the eastern part of the Danube in the wine-growing regions of Vienna (Wien) and Carnuntum. Each appellation reflects its own special and distinctive nature in the wines produced.

The festivities began with grandeur at WEIN IM THEATER, where guests were transported into the elegant ambiance of the Stadttheater Baden. Against this backdrop of theatrical splendor, wine enthusiasts indulged in a selection of ÖTW local and Erste Lage wines from the Thermenregion, Vienna, and Carnuntum.

Saturday and Sunday brought the main event: the OPEN CELLAR TOURS. Across the picturesque landscapes of the ÖTW regions Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental, and Wagram, 41 esteemed members opened their cellars to eager visitors. Amidst rolling vineyards and historic cellars, guests were treated to a sensory journey, tasting and discovering the diverse array of wines crafted with passion and expertise.

Saturday evening was truly the stuff of legends, as the MAGNUM PARTY unfolded in the majestic setting of the Minoritenkirche in Stein a.D. With live performances by Max Shelly & Band and DJ Didi Hiedler, the atmosphere was electric, pulsating with the energy of celebration.

From the refined elegance of Grüner Veltliner to the ethereal beauty of Riesling, each producer's portfolio revealed a unique expression of Austria's terroir and winemaking heritage. I was particularly struck by the meticulous craftsmanship and unwavering commitment to quality evident in every bottle. Whether it was the vibrant fruit flavors of Sauvignon Blanc, the velvety textures of Pinot Noir, or the harmonious balance of Zweigelt, each wine exuded a sense of place and authenticity that spoke volumes about the skill and passion of its creators.

I found myself captivated by the impressive range offered by esteemed producers such as Weingut Stadt KremsWeingut Nigl, Weingut Leindl, Weingut Proidl, Weingut Buchegger & Mayr, Weingut Steininger, Weingut Bründlmayr, and Vitikultur Moser. These distinguished estates, each bearing the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (ÖTW) seal, showcased an extraordinary diversity of varietals and styles, leaving a lasting impression on my palate.

As we reflect on this momentous anniversary, we are reminded of the enduring legacy of the TOUR DE VIN. Here's to 30 years of unforgettable moments, and to many more to come.
