Crâmpoșie Selecționată: An Exploration of Romania's Refined Grape Variety

The Crâmpoșie grape variety, a hallmark of Romania's viticultural heritage, underwent a revolutionary transformation in 1972.

Spearheaded by Dr. Ing. Mircea Mărculescu and his research team at Drăgășani, the selected Crâmpoșie, or Crâmpoșie Selecționată, was born through years of diligent studies and a groundbreaking direct sexual hybridization of Crâmpoșie and Gordan grapes. This achievement not only addressed the sterility challenges inherent in the traditional Crâmpoșie but also elevated its potential to unprecedented levels.

From Modest Beginnings to Exceptional Potential

Initially, the selected Crâmpoșie was conceived with the goal of producing white wines for everyday consumption. However, as the variety matured and demonstrated its capabilities, its production focus shifted significantly. With its hallmark high acidity and ability to accumulate sugars effectively, the Crâmpoșie Selecționată became an exceptional candidate for high-quality still and sparkling wines. The resulting wines are celebrated for their fruity, balanced profiles and a unique freshness that invigorates the palate.

A Transformation Beyond Comparison

Compared to the original Crâmpoșie, the selected variant represents a substantial leap forward. The old Crâmpoșie had dual utility as both a table grape and a wine grape, albeit with inconsistent yields and mixed quality. The Crâmpoșie Selecționată, in contrast, is purposefully designed for winemaking, consistently delivering high yields and superior quality. Its wines are predominantly dry, boasting an alcohol content of 11-12% vol., with remarkable versatility that includes sweet and medium-sweet options, as well as sparkling wines crafted using the méthode traditionnelle.

A Mainstay of Romanian Terroir

The Crâmpoșie Selecționată now holds a place of prominence in the Drăgășani vineyard, where it has effectively replaced its predecessor. Its cultivation has also expanded to other renowned Romanian vineyards, including Murfatlar-Medgidia, Panciu, and Odobești. Despite its widespread domestic acclaim, the variety remains exclusive to Romania, with a concentrated presence in southern regions like Oltenia. According to ONVPV (2022), 135 hectares are currently planted with Crâmpoșie Selecționată, underscoring its specialized yet significant footprint in the national wine industry.
