The Toscana IGT designation, one of Italy’s most prestigious geographical indications, is undergoing a transformative evolution to bolster its global identity and align with contemporary market trends.
The Consorzio Vino Toscana IGT, led by President Cesare Cecchi, recently secured approval from the Tuscany Region for a series of pivotal amendments to its procedural guidelines. These changes, which include streamlining the name to “Toscana” and introducing a new "Spumante" category, mark a significant step in enhancing the region’s wine heritage and appeal.
A Unified Identity: From “Toscano or Toscana” to “Toscana”
The decision to drop the dual terminology of “Toscano or Toscana” in favor of solely “Toscana” reflects a strategic move to unify and reinforce the brand identity of Tuscany’s wines. Cesare Cecchi emphasized the importance of this change, stating:
“The term ‘Toscana’ represents a strong, collective heritage. It’s a brand recognized and revered globally, and this adjustment will help consumers better associate the wines with their geographical origin.”
Eugenio Giani, President of Tuscany Region, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how “Toscana” has evolved into a powerful symbol of quality and regional pride beyond the realm of wine.
Embracing Sparkling Wines: The New “Spumante” Category
Another major development is the inclusion of sparkling wines under the Toscana IGT designation. This encompasses both Metodo Classico (traditional bottle fermentation) and Metodo Martinotti/Charmat (fermentation in autoclaves) sparkling wine production. The introduction of “Spumante,” “Spumante di qualità,” and “Rosso frizzante” categories reflects a response to growing domestic and international demand for sparkling wines.
Stefania Saccardi, Vice President of Tuscany Region and Assessor of Agri-Food, commented:
“The demand for sparkling wines is increasing globally. By integrating these categories, Tuscan wine producers can diversify their offerings, catering to evolving consumer preferences while boosting their economic growth.”
Tuscany has seen a rise in sparkling wine production in recent years, with vineyards across the region embracing innovation to create products that combine traditional techniques with modern market trends.
The Consortium’s Vision for the Future
With over 1,594 members, including wine producers and vine growers, the Consorzio Vino Toscana IGT oversees a remarkable annual production of 95.5 million bottles, 69% of which are exported. Recognized by Italy’s Ministry of Agriculture in 2023, the Consortium has been instrumental in driving initiatives that elevate the status of Toscana IGT wines.
Director Stefano Campatelli highlighted the significance of the amendments:
“This evolution ensures that Toscana IGT remains synonymous with excellence and innovation. From pioneering the ‘Super Tuscan’ phenomenon to embracing sparkling wines, our producers are redefining what it means to be a global leader in winemaking.”
Navigating the Approval Process
The Tuscany Region has forwarded the proposed amendments to the Ministry of Agriculture, where they will undergo further scrutiny before being submitted to the European Commission in Brussels. If all approvals align, these changes could take effect as early as the 2025 harvest season.
