The Swedish Wine Market in 2023: A Year of Contrasts and Growth

The Swedish wine market has undergone significant transformations in 2023, as evidenced by data from Swedish customs analyzed by the Spanish Wine Market Observatory (OeMv), citing Vinetur.

This year marked notable shifts in both the volume and value of wine imports, showcasing a complex and evolving landscape for wine consumption in Sweden.

Decline in Volume, Surge in Value

In terms of volume, Sweden imported 197.5 million liters of wine in 2023, representing a 7.3% decrease from the previous year. This figure is the lowest since 2011, indicating a declining trend in the sheer quantity of wine being brought into the country. However, this decline in volume contrasts sharply with the financial aspect of wine imports. The value of these imports reached a historical high, growing by 5.5% compared to 2022, totaling 9,557 million Swedish crowns (SEK) (EUR 82.2mn). This increase is largely attributed to a significant rise in the average price per liter, which climbed by 13.8% to SEK 48.38 (EUR 4.15).

Economic Translation and Trends

When translated into euros, based on the current exchange rate, Sweden's wine imports in 2023 were worth approximately 820 million euros, with an average price of EUR 4.15 per liter. This trend of increasing value over volume highlights a shift in consumer preferences towards higher-quality, more expensive wines. Since the turn of the century, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the value of wine imports has been 6.3%, significantly outpacing the 2.1% CAGR for volume.

A noteworthy development in 2023 was the rise in imports of bulk wine, which was the only category to experience a reduction in price. Despite this price drop, the value of all types of imported wine increased, suggesting a robust market demand for diverse wine categories. Packaged wine remains the dominant segment in terms of volume, although it has shown the least growth since 2000. It is followed by bag-in-box wine in volume and sparkling wine in terms of value.

Export Dynamics: Spain's Ascendancy

Among the exporting countries, Spain emerged as a standout performer in 2023. Spanish wine exports to Sweden saw a remarkable 21% increase in value, the highest growth rate among the top ten suppliers. This surge has solidified Spain's position as the third-largest wine supplier to Sweden, defying the global trend of volume reduction. Spain's success contrasts with the performance of Italy and France, Sweden's leading wine suppliers by volume.

Italy regained its position as the top exporter by volume, overtaking France after two years. This achievement was driven by a significant increase in bulk wine exports, which are generally more affordable. Conversely, the volume of French wine imports declined following a record high in 2022. Additionally, Denmark's role as a wine distributor diminished compared to its exceptional performance in the previous year.

Market Insights and Future Implications

The evolving dynamics of the Swedish wine import market reflect broader trends in consumer behavior and the strategic responses of exporting countries. The increase in the average price per liter suggests a growing preference for premium wines among Swedish consumers. This shift is likely driven by a combination of factors, including higher disposable incomes, evolving tastes, and a greater emphasis on wine quality.

The performance of Spain, Italy, and France illustrates the varying strategies employed by wine-exporting nations to adapt to changing market conditions. Spain's focus on value growth, Italy's volume expansion through bulk wine, and France's resilience in high-value segments underscore the diverse approaches to maintaining and enhancing market presence.

In conclusion, the Swedish wine market in 2023 has been characterized by a significant decline in import volume but an unprecedented increase in import value. This dual trend highlights a shift towards higher-quality wine consumption and underscores the strategic importance of pricing and quality optimization for exporting countries.
