The Sparkling Success of Italian Wine Exports in 2024

Italian wine exports continue their upward trajectory in 2024, registering a remarkable value of EUR 5.17 billion in the first eight months—a 4.1% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

This growth reflects the resilience of the sector despite economic challenges and a changing global market. Among the stars of this performance, Italian sparkling wines shine the brightest, showcasing both their growing popularity and adaptability to evolving consumer preferences.

Sparkling Wines: The Growth Engine of Italian Exports

From January to August 2024, Italian sparkling wine exports reached EUR 1.47 billion, up 8.42% from 2023, and accounted for an impressive 28.3% of total Italian wine exports. Volumes also surged by 12% to 343.4 million liters, highlighting the increasing global thirst for these effervescent delights.

The Prosecco phenomenon dominates this segment, contributing EUR 1.1 billion of the total sparkling wine export value. Yet, Italy's sparkling wine offerings extend beyond Prosecco, with premium denominations like Franciacorta, Asti, Trentodoc, and Alta Langa contributing their unique qualities to the mix.

Shifting Consumer Trends Favor Bubbles

The success of Italian sparkling wines can be attributed to several factors:

  • Changing Consumption Patterns: Global consumers, especially younger generations, are gravitating toward "lighter" and more "easy-to-drink" options, making sparkling wines an ideal choice.
  • Climate Considerations: Warmer weather has also contributed to a preference for refreshing beverages.
  • Mixology Influence: Sparkling wines have become a cornerstone of cocktail culture, further expanding their reach.
