Symington Harvest 2025: Preparing for a Promising but Small Vintage

Preparations are well underway for the 2025 harvest across the estates in the Douro, Alentejo, and Vinho Verde regions of Symington Family Estates.

Since early August, the Symington's viticultural teams have been conducting maturation studies, providing the first indications of this year’s potential. While yields are forecast to be lower, there are encouraging signs of excellent quality.

Early Harvest Progress

White grape harvesting has already begun in the Douro and Alentejo, while red varieties continue to ripen under the close coordination of viticulture and winemaking teams.

Weather Conditions: A Year of Extremes

Following a more moderate growth cycle in 2024, weather in 2025 has been highly variable. December was exceptionally dry, yet heavy rainfall in January, March, and April replenished water reserves. In the Douro, March was recorded as the second wettest of the century, with budbreak occurring in the final week of the month — close to the long-term average.

By late July, the Douro had faced a 34% rainfall deficit, with almost no precipitation in June and July. Four heatwaves struck the region, including a severe 10-day event in early August, when maximum temperatures exceeded 40°C, surpassing the infamous 2003 heatwave. Although Alentejo and Vinho Verde did not reach such extremes, both regions experienced similar water shortages.

Vineyard Impact

Early-season water reserves supported swift flowering and generally strong fruit set. However, the prolonged heat has slowed berry development. Initial studies show berries in the Douro could be up to 30% smaller than average, which will likely reduce yields. Despite this, phenological development is on schedule, and expectations for fruit concentration and quality remain high.

Looking Ahead

With temperatures now easing to more seasonal levels, accompanied by cooler nights and the possibility of light showers, conditions appear favorable for the final ripening of red grape varieties. The Fonte Souto winery in Alentejo is already operational, while preparations are ongoing in the Douro boutique wineries for the arrival of freshly harvested grapes.

Although the 2025 harvest is expected to be smaller in volume, the vintage holds great promise for producing wines of exceptional quality and character.
