In a noteworthy development for the Russian wine industry, the production of sparkling and fortified wines increased by 21% in the first half of 2024.
This significant growth was highlighted by Irina Fedina, Deputy Director of the Department of Food and Processing Industry of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, during a press conference for the Wine Guide of Russia, which audits winemaking enterprises in Kuban.
Impressive Growth Figures
The increase in production is particularly striking for fortified wines, which saw a 73% rise in the first six months of 2024. This substantial uptick underscores a growing demand and possibly improved production techniques within the industry. Overall, wine production in Russia has grown by 21%, reflecting a robust expansion in the sector.
Sales Surge Across the Country
Accompanying the rise in production, the volume of wine product sales in Russia also experienced growth, increasing by nearly 5% compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, sales of sparkling wines rose by 13%, while fortified wine sales saw a 12% increase. These figures indicate a growing consumer preference for these types of wines.
Krasnodar Krai: The Epicenter of Russian Winemaking
Krasnodar Krai, a prominent region for viticulture and winemaking in Russia, has outpaced national growth rates. Sales volumes in this region increased by 9% over the past six months, further solidifying its position as a leader in the industry. Kuban, a key area within Krasnodar Krai, is responsible for producing 43% of all Russian wine and champagne.
The region is not only significant for its current production but also for its potential for future growth. Annually, approximately 1.8 thousand hectares of young vineyards are planted, ensuring a steady increase in production capacity. In 2023 alone, the production of grape seedlings in Kuban surged by 40%, rising from 3.2 million to 4.5 million pieces. This expansion highlights the region's commitment to enhancing its viticulture capabilities.
Wine Tourism: A Growing Industry
Wine tourism is emerging as a vital component of the resort industry in Krasnodar Krai. The region's rich winemaking heritage and increasing production capacity make it an attractive destination for wine enthusiasts, contributing to the local economy and promoting Russian wines on a broader scale.
