Austria: Spar Invests EUR 14 Million in Modernizing Schloss Fels Winery

In a bold move towards enhancing its winemaking capabilities, Spar has invested EUR 14 million in the modernization of its Schloss Fels winery.

Over the past two years, significant renovations have transformed the building and technology, ushering in a new era of innovation and quality. Under new management, with an expanded product range and a modern brand identity, the winery now boasts the most advanced bottling plant in Europe, capable of filling 18,000 bottles per hour.

The focal point of the modernization efforts is the new wine hall, complete with a photovoltaic system on the roof to promote sustainability. This state-of-the-art facility represents Spar's commitment to environmental stewardship while also enhancing efficiency and productivity. With the installation of cutting-edge equipment, including the latest bottling technology, the winery is poised to meet the demands of a dynamic market with precision and agility.

Leading the charge in this transformation is Mag. Christian Bauer, who assumed the role of winery manager following the retirement of Klaus Klein. With a background in engineering and a passion for winemaking, Bauer brings a wealth of expertise to his new position. He envisions the Schloss Fels winery as a premium destination, focused on producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.

The winery's product portfolio has also undergone a significant expansion, now comprising 107 items, including 62 wines, two sparkling wines, 42 spirits, and even grape seed oil. This diverse range caters to Spar's sales channels across Austria, Northern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and Hungary, ensuring a wide reach and accessibility for consumers. The introduction of a rosé wine adds a touch of versatility to the collection, appealing to a broader audience of wine enthusiasts.

Spar's commitment to winemaking excellence is further underscored by its substantial vineyard holdings, totaling over 110 hectares. With an annual production of 15.5 million bottles of wine and spirits, the winery has firmly established itself as a key player in the industry. Since its acquisition by Spar Austria in 1986, the winery has experienced steady growth, expanding its operations and cultivating partnerships with 35 contract winegrowers.
