Spanish Wine Exports 2025: Value Grows Slightly as Volumes Decline

Spanish wine exports between July 2024 and June 2025 closed with a mixed performance: a slight increase in value but a notable drop in volume.

According to data from the Tax Agency analyzed by the Spanish Interprofessional Wine Organization (OIVE), total export revenues reached EUR 2,947.3 million, up 0.2% year-on-year, while volumes fell by 5.9% to 1.91 billion liters. In absolute terms, Spain invoiced EUR 5.9 million more, but exported 118.8 million liters fewer compared to the same period last year.

Sparkling Wines: Cava Faces Pressure, Others Gain Ground

Spanish sparkling wines recorded sales of EUR 528.4 million (+2.6%) and 155.4 million liters (–6.7%). Within this category, Cava remains the flagship but experienced declines: EUR 391.1 million (–4.1%) and 105.8 million liters (–18.2%). By contrast, other sparkling wines showed strong growth, reaching EUR 137.2 million (+27.9%) and 49.6 million liters (+33.7%).

Bottled Wines with PDOs Hold Steady

Packaged PDO wines—the backbone of Spain’s quality exports—reached EUR 1,231.1 million (+0.8%) despite a 2.7% volume decline to 239.4 million liters.

  • White PDO wines: EUR 263.8 million (+4.5%) and 62.3 million liters (+1.6%).
  • Red & Rosé PDO wines: EUR 967.2 million (–0.2%) and 177 million liters (–4.2%).

By contrast, PGI wines struggled: sales dropped 7.3% to EUR 124.6 million, with volumes down 16.2%.

Varietal and Other Bottled Wines: Weakness in Reds

Varietal bottled wines fell 7.6% in value to EUR 153.9 million and 5.4% in volume to 86.2 million liters. The decline was sharper for reds and rosés (–12.4% in value, –9.5% in volume) than whites (nearly stable).

Unlabeled bottled wines offered stability, growing 4% to EUR 204.9 million, with volumes up 5.5%. Bag-in-box wines declined slightly (–2.9% in value), with PDO wines particularly hard-hit (–21.8%).

Fortified and Semi-Sparkling Wines Show Positive Trends

Fortified wines reached EUR 55.3 million (+1.8%) and 11 million liters (+4.9%), with one of the highest average prices in Spanish exports. Semi-sparkling wines also grew, hitting EUR 31.9 million (+3.4%) and 19.6 million liters (+14.9%).

Bulk Wines: Still Significant but Declining in Key Segments

Bulk wine exports totaled 532.9 million liters worth EUR 297.9 million. Most growth came from unindicated bulk wines (+2.8% value, –0.5% volume) and varietals (+0.4% volume). However, PDO bulk wines collapsed by 77.5% in volume, to just 195,000 liters.

Key Export Markets

  • Germany remains Spain’s top market by volume (326 million liters) and one of the largest by value (EUR 198.6 million).
  • The United States leads in value for bottled wines, reaching EUR 182.7 million with 74.7 million liters.
  • France ranked third (EUR 162 million; 171.4 million liters), followed by the UK (EUR 154.4 million; 129 million liters) and Italy (EUR 92.5 million; 61.9 million liters).
  • Other important non-EU markets include Canada (EUR 62.9m), Japan (EUR 59m), and Mexico (EUR 51.2m).

Outlook

The Spanish wine sector faces a dual reality: stable or slightly improving revenues, but shrinking volumes. Premiumization—driven by PDO whites, non-Cava sparkling wines, fortified, and semi-sparkling wines—partly offsets declines in bulk and PGI categories. However, heavy competition, shifting global demand, and structural reliance on low-priced wines continue to challenge Spain’s positioning.
