Russian wine exports are gaining momentum in global markets, with a 19% increase in value recorded during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
According to Agroexport, the state-run center under Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture, this growth is largely attributed to stronger international demand for Russian sparkling wines.
Export Figures Show Upward Trajectory
Between January and June 2025, Russia exported 1.8 thousand tons of wine valued at USD 2.6 million. This marks a significant rise from the 1.5 thousand tons worth USD 2.2 million exported during the same period in 2024.
The export surge reflects Russia’s increasing footprint in key regional markets, with China, Kazakhstan, and Türkiye emerging as the top destinations. These countries have shown a growing appetite for both still and sparkling wines from Russia’s expanding wine industry.
Sparkling Wines Drive Growth
According to Agroexport analysts, the most notable boost came from the sparkling wine category, which has seen heightened exports to a broader list of countries including:
- China
- Kazakhstan
- Kyrgyzstan
- Türkiye
- Thailand
- Other Southeast Asian markets
This segment's popularity is helping Russian producers tap into international opportunities, even as brand awareness and competitiveness vary across markets.
China: A Market of Both Promise and Challenge
China remains a focal point for Russian wine exporters. While export volumes to China have increased, Agroexport highlights continued challenges such as strong competition from established wine-producing countries and limited consumer familiarity with Russian brands.
Nonetheless, progress is being made. Russian wineries have been expanding their product ranges, improving quality standards, and investing in marketing to build stronger market presence in Asia and beyond.
Outlook
The first-half export data for 2025 reflects a promising trend for Russian wine, particularly in its value growth and market diversification. While structural hurdles—especially in China—persist, the consistent rise in sparkling wine shipments and widening reach into new markets suggest a strategic pivot that may benefit Russian exporters in the long term.
If this momentum continues into the second half of the year, Russia’s wine industry could further strengthen its international position, supported by targeted branding efforts and continued support from government-backed export initiatives.
