Riesling Icon Erni Loosen Makes a Stunning Burgundy Debut with Perron de Mypont

In Burgundy, where centuries of tradition are measured by vintages and terroir, newsworthy events tend to be rare and incremental.

But every so often, something extraordinary breaks through the region’s contemplative rhythm—and Erni Loosen’s arrival is exactly that. Known across the globe for his masterful Rieslings from the Mosel Valley’s esteemed Dr. Loosen estate, Erni Loosen has unveiled his first collection of Burgundy wines, marking a significant milestone in his storied winemaking career.

This isn't a passing flirtation with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Loosen has long revered Burgundy, harboring a dream of working in the region since an internship in Chablis nearly 50 years ago. That dream has now materialized in Perron de Mypont, a Burgundy négociant label based in the east wing of Le Vieux Château de Puligny-Montrachet—Loosen’s most recent acquisition.

A Burgundy Vision, Decades in the Making

Loosen’s passion for Pinot Noir is no secret. Beyond Riesling, he produces the grape at Villa Wolf in Pfalz and Appassionata Estate in Oregon, where he has also earned acclaim for Chardonnay. But bringing his winemaking vision back to the birthplace of both grapes gives the project a deeper resonance. Partnering with Burgundian insider Manöel Bouchet, Loosen has launched a two-tiered range of wines that showcases their shared dedication to quality, authenticity, and terroir expression.

“Mano and I are perfectly aligned in our thinking about what makes a great Burgundy,” says Loosen. “This partnership of friends is built on shared philosophy and trust.”

The Wines: Maison and Edition Perron de Mypont

Perron de Mypont’s collection is split into two tiers:

  • Maison Perron de Mypont: Considered "entry-level" but highly limited, with only 18,000 bottles of Bourgogne Pinot Noir and 12,000 of Bourgogne Chardonnay produced. Priced around USD 35, these wines offer early access to the Loosen-Bouchet philosophy in Burgundy, with finesse and structure well above the category norm.
  • Edition Perron de Mypont: A range of ultra-limited, high-tier wines, including:
    • 2022 Meursault
    • 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin
    • 2023 Volnay
    • 2022 Meursault Premier Cru Perrières
    • 2019 Vougeot Premier Cru
    • 2022 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots

These wines are produced in quantities as small as one or two barrels each and range from USD 100 to USD 485, making them some of the rarest new releases from Burgundy today.

A Distinctive Négociant Approach

True to the Burgundian négociant model, the Maison wines are sourced from a mix of grapes, must, and fermented wine, then vinified and matured under the watchful eyes of Loosen and Bouchet at a custom crush facility.

The Edition wines, however, follow a different path. These are matured in the cellars of the growers themselves, allowing each cuvée to benefit from native yeast environments and microclimate influences, all while retaining a transparent connection to their specific terroirs.

“We collaborate on everything—from harvest timing to barrel aging—to craft wines that reflect both place and philosophy,” Loosen explains.

Beyond Wine: A Cultural Renaissance

Loosen’s investment goes well beyond the vineyard. After a three-year renovation, the east wing of the château now includes restored living quarters, guest rooms, and a grand hall for events and tastings. The final phase—a revived original barrel cellar—will soon allow some of the Edition wines to be aged directly on-site at the château, deepening the connection between land, craft, and hospitality.

“With each vintage, we get closer to the ideal of perfection in our heads,” says Loosen. “And we do it in Burgundy, where it all began.”

For wine lovers and collectors, the Perron de Mypont debut is a revelation—a rare intersection of experience, ambition, and terroir, executed with grace and authenticity. From the very first vintage, these wines are already whispering the language of greatness.
