In a remarkable turn of events for the Algarve wine industry, the region has experienced a significant increase in production for the 2024 harvest, reaching an impressive 1,982,177 litres of wine.
This represents a 20% growth compared to the 2023 season, marking an exceptional milestone for the region’s wine sector.
According to Sara Silva, President of the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), the increase in production far exceeded initial expectations. In an interview, Silva explained that back in July, when the Institute of Vine and Wine (IVV) requested forecast figures, the CVA conducted a survey among its producers. At the time, the forecast suggested an average increase of 8-10%. However, the final tally has shown a robust growth of more than 20% when compared to the previous year.
Record-Breaking Production and Certification
The 2024 production, which includes wines certified with the Denomination of Origin (DO) and the Algarve Geographical Indication (IG), reached more than 1.9 million litres. Additionally, around 100,000 to 200,000 litres of table wine, which are not certified, were also produced. This increase in production reflects the growing confidence and commitment of Algarve's wine producers, who are increasingly focusing on quality and international recognition.
Since 2012, the CVA has been instrumental in certifying wines from the Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, and Tavira regions, ensuring they meet stringent standards. With the demand for Algarve wines steadily increasing, the region’s vineyards are now not only producing more wine but also gaining a greater share of the market.
The Growth of the Algarve Wine Sector
One of the most promising developments in the Algarve wine industry is the steady increase in the number of producers. In 2024, the region saw 61 registered wine producers, a significant milestone. On average, the CVA has registered five to six new producers annually, which speaks to the growing appeal of the Algarve as a prime location for viticulture. As more producers enter the market, they bring with them an expansion of vineyard areas dedicated to producing high-quality wines.
Existing producers are also scaling up their operations. Many are increasing their vineyard acreage, thereby expanding their productive capacity. This growth reflects a broader trend in the region, where businesses are steadily investing in more efficient and higher-yielding vineyards, adapting to the growing demand for Algarve wines, both locally and internationally.
A Year of Profitability and Promise
The 2024 harvest was not only productive but also financially rewarding for producers. The higher production volume has led to a prosperous year for both local sales and the national market. The Algarve Wine Commission has emphasized that, while the increase in production was substantial, the profitability of the industry is just as noteworthy. This growth is a testament to the quality and resilience of the Algarve’s wine producers, who are constantly adapting to market demands and refining their wine-making processes.
According to Sara Silva, “It was a year that was very productive and profitable, including for the national market.” The continuous expansion of the region's wine production capacity, along with the increasing recognition of Algarve wines, positions the region for sustained growth in the years to come.
