Chinese Ningxia Wine Exports

Ningxia’s Rising Presence in Global Wine Markets

Despite a challenging global economic climate that has dampened wine sales, exports of Ningxia wine surged by 125% in 2024, former Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying announced at the recent "Ningxia Fine Wine Banquet" in Hong Kong.

Now serving as vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Leung highlighted this growth as a testament to Ningxia’s ability to produce high-quality wines and Hong Kong’s critical role as a gateway for Chinese wineries seeking global expansion.

Ningxia’s Rising Presence in Global Wine Markets

Ningxia, one of China’s premier wine regions, produced 140 million bottles in 2023, contributing to an industry valued at over RMB 40 billion (USD 5.52 billion). The region’s wines have gained international attention for their quality, helping boost exports even amid an economic downturn.

While Ningxia's overall exports grew, Hong Kong Customs reported a notable rise in the import volume of mainland Chinese wines to the city. In 2024, still wine imports from China reached 90,478 liters, an 86.88% increase from 2023. However, the total import value declined by 7.3% to HKD 9.99 million (USD 1.28 million), suggesting a greater influx of lower-priced or bulk-imported wines.

Leung’s cited 125% export growth specifically pertains to Ningxia’s overseas sales, whereas Hong Kong Customs data encompasses all Chinese wine imports into the Special Administrative Region. Despite rapid expansion, Chinese wines still occupy a niche market in Hong Kong, ranking 14th by value in 2024 and accounting for only 0.17% of total wine imports.

Hong Kong’s Role as a Launchpad for Chinese Wineries

As Asia’s premier wine hub, Hong Kong plays a crucial role in facilitating Chinese wine exports. Xige Estate, a leading Ningxia-based winery, has leveraged Hong Kong’s international reach to expand its footprint. The winery participated in the 2024 Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival and hosted a promotional event at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center, connecting with buyers from Japan and Singapore.

According to Xige Estate owner Zhang Yanzhi, Japanese and Singaporean markets have shown strong demand for the winery’s wines, a success he attributes to the credibility built through business operations in Hong Kong. To strengthen its presence in Asia, Xige plans to establish a Hong Kong-based company and warehouse in 2025.

Growing Presence of Chinese Wines in Luxury Retail and Hospitality

Chinese fine wines are making inroads into Hong Kong’s luxury hospitality sector. Premium Chinese wines are now available in top hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and airlines. Major retailers like City’super and Cathay Pacific Airways have begun stocking high-end Chinese wines, while importers such as Watson’s Wine, EWM Fine Wines, Enoteca, and Northeast Wine & Spirits have expanded their portfolios to include more selections from China.

While Chinese wines remain a small segment of Hong Kong’s overall wine market, their rising recognition and strategic positioning through Hong Kong’s trade channels suggest significant growth potential. As more Chinese wineries gain exposure and refine their marketing strategies, the presence of Ningxia wines on global shelves is set to expand further.
