Moldova Sets Ambitious Course for Its Wine Industry Through 2030

The Republic of Moldova has unveiled a comprehensive vision for the future of its wine industry after approving the Wine Sector Strategic Development Vision for 2026–2030.

The initiative reflects the country's ambition to move beyond traditional export markets and establish itself as a producer of premium wines recognized for quality, authenticity, and sustainability.

As one of Moldova's most significant economic sectors, winemaking continues to play a vital role in national development. The industry contributes roughly 16% of agricultural output, generates hundreds of millions of dollars in export revenue, and provides employment for approximately 150,000 people.

Central to the new strategy is the modernization of vineyards and production practices. The government plans to encourage investments that improve vineyard efficiency, adapt to climate challenges, and meet changing international consumer preferences.

The strategy also reinforces the importance of geographical indications and appellations. Expanding the production of PGI and PDO wines will help strengthen consumer confidence while highlighting the unique characteristics of Moldova's diverse wine-growing regions.

Native grape varieties will receive increased attention as part of the country's long-term branding strategy. By promoting local cultivars alongside internationally recognised varieties, Moldova hopes to create a stronger identity that distinguishes its wines in global markets.

Since nearly 85% of domestic wine production is exported, authorities aim to increase profitability by targeting higher-value markets rather than simply expanding export volumes. Building stronger international brands and diversifying export destinations are expected to improve resilience against changing global market conditions.

The development plan also extends beyond wine production. Sustainable viticulture, innovation, responsible consumption, and wine tourism are identified as key priorities that will help strengthen Moldova's reputation as both a wine-producing nation and an attractive tourism destination.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, together with the National Office of Vine and Wine and industry stakeholders, will oversee the implementation of the strategy. Their shared objective is to ensure that Moldovan wines continue gaining international recognition while creating greater long-term value for producers and the national economy.
