Brunello estate Poggio Antico has enlisted esteemed architect Marco Casamonti to design their new winery in the picturesque hills of Montalcino.
Casamonti is renowned for his work on the award-winning Antinori winery in the Chianti Classico region, which opened in 2012 following seven years of construction. His architectural portfolio extends globally, encompassing ambitious projects in Asia such as the winery in Bà Nà Hills, Vietnam, and the Shangri-La Winery in Penglai, China.
Plans for the new Poggio Antico winery were unveiled at a special ceremony in Florence last week, attended by dignitaries including the president of the Tuscany region and the mayor of Montalcino.
Pier Giuseppe D’Alessandro, general manager of Poggio Antico, expressed confidence in the project, stating, "The new winery will once again astonish and enhance the splendid territory we call home." He praised the collaboration with architect Casamonti, emphasizing that the design is both simple yet distinctive, remarkable, and environmentally mindful.
Casamonti’s reputation for creating cutting-edge wineries was solidified when Antinori was recognized as The World’s Best Vineyard in 2022. He also serves as a professor at the Faculty of Architecture in Genoa, with the new Poggio Antico winery marking only his second project in his native Italy.
Situated high in the Montalcino hills at over 500 meters above sea level, Poggio Antico spans 37 hectares and benefits from a mountain climate and proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea. These factors ensure the vineyards receive a steady breeze year-round, resulting in the production of elegant Sangiovese grapes.
In 2017, Belgian entrepreneur Marcel Van Poecke acquired Poggio Antico through his investment vehicle, Atlas Invest, and has since made substantial investments in the estate. Poggio Antico is now gearing up to introduce a new label, Vigna i Poggi 2019, marking the estate’s debut in single vineyard wines.
