Henkell Freixenet, renowned as a global powerhouse in sparkling wines, toasted to a landmark achievement in 2023, as it reached a turnover of EUR 1.23bn, excluding excise taxes.
This impressive figure represents a notable 4.1% increase compared to the previous year, showcasing the company's resilience and adaptability in navigating the complexities of the international market.
Andreas Brokemper, the CEO of Henkell Freixenet, attributed this success to the company's unwavering commitment to meeting consumer demands and staying ahead of industry trends. By effectively anticipating market dynamics, Henkell Freixenet not only sustained its position but also strengthened its foothold as a global leader in sparkling wines.
Key highlights of the company's performance include a remarkable 6% growth in sparkling wines and an even more impressive 11% surge in spirits sales. However, the still wines segment experienced an 8% reduction in growth, underscoring the volatility and challenges inherent in this sector.
The flagship brands of Henkell Freixenet – Freixenet, Mionetto, and Henkell – witnessed significant growth, with Freixenet and Mionetto leading the charge. Innovative offerings such as Freixenet 0.0% have resonated well with consumers, aligning with the burgeoning demand for alcohol-free alternatives.
Geographically, Henkell Freixenet's success story transcends borders. The DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) saw a remarkable 12% growth, consolidating the company's dominance in sparkling wines and spirits. Eastern Europe experienced an 8% revenue increase, with Poland emerging as a standout performer.
In Western Europe, particularly in France and Italy, the company maintained a strong market presence, contributing to a 3% growth overall. Despite a slight revenue decline of 4% in America, Henkell Freixenet secured market share gains in the US and Canada, while South America witnessed an impressive 30% growth, notably in Brazil.
However, amidst the celebration of financial success, challenges loom on the horizon. The severe drought in El Penedès since 2021 has led to grape shortages, significantly impacting cava production. Pedro Ferrer, co-CEO and vice president of the Freixenet Group, emphasized the company's commitment to collaborating with the sector to ensure the sustainability of cava production in the region.
As Henkell Freixenet continues its journey of expansion and innovation, it remains cognizant of the environmental and supply challenges that may shape its trajectory in the years ahead.
