According to RIA Novosti’s analysis of open data, the United States, Great Britain, and Japan remained the world’s largest buyers of sparkling wine during the first nine months of 2024.
Meanwhile, Russia climbed from ninth to eighth place despite a decline in its champagne imports.
Top Global Buyers of Sparkling Wine
By the end of January-September 2024, the United States secured its position as the largest global buyer of champagne, with purchases amounting to USD 1.24 billion. The United Kingdom and Japan rounded out the top three, importing USD 817 million and USD 474 million worth of champagne, respectively. This trio has consistently led global sparkling wine imports for several years.

- Germany: USD 314 million
- Italy: USD 218 million
- Belgium: USD 199 million
- Australia: USD 170 million
Russia’s rise to eighth place was notable, with imports totaling USD 163 million despite a 12% decrease. Switzerland (USD 151 million) and Canada (USD 142 million) completed the top ten.
Mid-Tier Importers
Countries like Sweden, France, and Spain followed closely, showcasing varying trends in their import volumes:
- Sweden: USD 134 million (+5%)
- France: USD 132 million (+4%)
- Spain: USD 87 million (-29%)
- Austria: USD 81 million
- Denmark: USD 78 million (+1%)
The Top 20: Emerging and Declining Markets
The remaining spots in the top twenty were occupied by Latvia, Norway, Poland, Finland, and Mexico. Their import values and year-on-year changes are as follows:
- Latvia: USD 62 million
- Norway: USD 59 million (-17%)
- Poland: USD 53 million
- Finland: USD 45 million (+1%)
- Mexico: USD 42 million (-38%)
Key Growth and Decline Insights
Among the 20 largest importers, Sweden recorded the highest growth at +5%, followed by France (+4%) and modest increases in Finland and Denmark (+1% each). On the other hand, significant declines were observed in:
- Mexico: -38%
- Spain: -29%
- Italy: -19%
- Switzerland: -17%
- Norway: -17%
