The Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) has proudly announced the addition of five new Master of Wine (MW) professionals to its esteemed membership, marking a significant milestone for these individuals and the global wine community.
Meet the New MWs
The newly appointed Masters of Wine include Emily Brighton MW, Christopher Martin MW, Robert Mathias MW, and Dror Nativ MW from the United Kingdom, along with Pietro Russo MW based in Italy. Their induction into the IMW represents the first cohort of 2024, bringing the total number of active MWs worldwide to 417, spread across 31 countries.
Rigorous Journey to Mastery
Becoming a Master of Wine is a culmination of rigorous dedication and mastery across all facets of wine. Candidates must navigate through one of the most challenging examinations in the realm of wine education, showcasing profound understanding and expertise.
The MW examination unfolds in three critical stages:
- Theory and Practical Exams: These are undertaken at the conclusion of stage two, testing candidates on their theoretical knowledge and practical application.
- Research Paper (RP): The third stage involves the submission of a comprehensive research paper, delving deep into a wine-related topic encompassing sciences, arts, humanities, or social sciences. Only upon successful completion of the RP stage does an individual earn the prestigious title of Master of Wine.
Celebration and Recognition
Cathy van Zyl MW, Chair of IMW, expressed heartfelt congratulations to the new MWs, acknowledging their unwavering dedication and sacrifices in pursuit of excellence. She reflected on the significance of this achievement, resonating with joy and pride shared among the global MW community.
In her words, "The announcement of new Masters of Wine raises many emotions in ‘old’ MWs around the world. It reminds us of our own MW journeys and rekindles the accomplishment we felt when we received that ‘phone call’. But mostly, overwhelmingly, it fills us with joy and pride for the ‘new’. Very well done and congratulations to Emily, Christopher, Robert, Dror, and Pietro. We recognize your perseverance and the sacrifices you have made; The time and effort you have put in to get to this point, and often very long distances you have travelled in search of knowledge. Welcome to the Institute."

As these talented individuals join the ranks of Masters of Wine, they bring with them not only a wealth of knowledge but also a commitment to advancing the wine industry through their expertise. Their induction underscores the IMW's role in fostering excellence and innovation in global wine education, ensuring that the tradition of mastery continues to thrive.
