Crémant de Loire on the Rise: A Sparkling Alternative Gaining Global Momentum in 2024

In a wine market undergoing major shifts, Crémant de Loire is emerging as one of the most promising players in the world of sparkling wines.

In 2024, it proved its staying power, registering impressive growth both in international exports and domestic sales, even as Champagne experienced one of its most challenging years in recent memory.

The Global Sparkle of Crémant de Loire

According to Vitisphere, Crémant de Loire exports soared by 15% in 2024, highlighting a key trend in global wine consumption: the pursuit of affordable alternatives to Champagne that don’t sacrifice quality or elegance. Germany continues to be the top market, with the United Kingdom showing a striking 40% increase, followed closely by the United States, Belgium, Sweden, and Japan.

Out of a total 202,000 hectoliters produced, 122,500 hectoliters were sold internationally—underscoring the Loire Valley’s increasing appeal on the global stage. These wines offer an ideal combination of freshness, lightness, and accessibility, making them a top choice for both casual drinkers and savvy collectors.

Why Crémant de Loire Is Booming

The success of Crémant de Loire is not only a reflection of its intrinsic quality—typically made using the traditional method and often based on Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and other local varietals—but also its strategic positioning in a rapidly evolving market. As Champagne prices continue to rise, many wine lovers are seeking sparkling wines that offer authenticity, craftsmanship, and value—and Crémant de Loire checks all those boxes.

In France, supermarket sales of Crémant de Loire have also increased by 13%, reaching 33,600 hectoliters with an average price of €6.42 per bottle (tax included). This proves its appeal isn’t limited to exports alone; domestic consumers are also embracing this sparkling gem.

Loire Producers Expand with Confidence

The rising demand has prompted significant expansions among leading producers. Alliance Loire, the powerhouse cooperative behind the “De Chanceny” label, launched a new brand called “Loria” in 2024, producing 2.6 million bottles, an 8% increase from the previous year.

Meanwhile, Gratien & Meyer, another cornerstone of the region, is investing heavily in its future. The winery has acquired 25 hectares in Saumurois, fully dedicated to Crémant de Loire production, with ambitions to reach 5 million bottles by 2030.

A Sparkling Future

As consumer preferences shift toward lighter, fresher, and more affordable wines, Crémant de Loire stands out as a sparkling wine with the right balance of tradition, taste, and price. With exports climbing and production scaling up to meet demand, it’s not just a trend—it’s a movement that confirms the Loire Valley's place among the world’s top sparkling wine regions.

For wine lovers, investors, and enthusiasts, Crémant de Loire presents an opportunity to explore refined bubbles without the Champagne price tag—while supporting a region that’s innovating and expanding with each vintage.
