Charles Symington chosen to be new PFV President

Charles Symington Appointed President of Primum Familiae Vini

In an exciting development for the world of wine, Charles Symington, the Head Winemaker of Symington Family Estates, has been appointed as the next President of Primum Familiae Vini (PFV).

This association, comprising twelve of the most prestigious wine families globally, entrusts one member each year to steer its activities and represent its values on an international stage. Charles Symington will take over from Véronique Drouhin of Maison Joseph Drouhin in France, starting his term in July 2024 and concluding in June 2025.

Upholding Tradition and Embracing Innovation

On his nomination, Charles Symington expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm: "I am extremely honored to be taking over from my predecessors at Primum Familiae Vini and to support our twelve families who share the same values: the culture of excellence, love and respect for the earth and the terroir, and the powerful desire to remain family-run, independent businesses and transmit the heritage of our ancestors to the next generation."

Symington's leadership comes at a time of dynamic change and opportunity within the PFV. Last year it was announced that Véronique Drouhin of Maison Joseph Drouhin, with vineyards in Burgundy and Oregon, had taken on the role, representing PFV at various wine events around the world. Under her guidance, the past year saw significant strides, particularly in addressing climate change challenges. This progress was a testament to the collaborative spirit and shared expertise of the association's members. It has now been revealed that Drouhin will be succeeded by Symington, who heads up winemaking at Port giant Symington Family Estates.

Vision for the Future

Looking forward, Charles Symington has already outlined an ambitious agenda for his presidency. One of his key initiatives will be to direct the technical committee's attention towards the evaluation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in viticulture and winemaking. "These are particularly exciting times at PFV," he noted. "Among initiatives that I would like to draw, I will very shortly be proposing that the technical committee focuses on the evaluation of Artificial Intelligence in viticulture and winemaking, a subject of the future that will enable the new generations within the 12 families to contribute their knowledge and share it with our entire group."

This forward-thinking approach not only highlights Symington's commitment to innovation but also underscores the importance of integrating modern technology with traditional winemaking practices. The use of AI has the potential to revolutionize various aspects of viticulture, from precision farming and yield prediction to pest control and climate adaptation strategies. By harnessing this technology, PFV aims to enhance sustainability, efficiency, and quality in winemaking, ensuring that these historic family estates continue to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.

Symington Family Estates: A Legacy of Excellence

Charles Symington's own family estate, Symington Family Estates, is a testament to the enduring legacy of family-run wine businesses. Based in Portugal's Douro Valley, the Symington family has been producing some of the world's finest ports and wines for over five generations. Their commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation has earned them a distinguished reputation in the wine community.

A Year of Collaboration and Growth

As the new PFV President, Charles Symington will play a crucial role in fostering collaboration among the twelve member families. This unique association, which includes renowned names like Antinori, Torres, and Perrin, provides a platform for sharing knowledge, promoting excellence, and addressing common challenges. Symington's leadership will undoubtedly inspire and guide PFV towards new achievements and greater unity.

In conclusion, Charles Symington's appointment as President of Primum Familiae Vini marks a significant milestone for both him and the association. His vision of blending tradition with innovation promises to usher in a new era of excellence and sustainability in winemaking. As he takes the helm, the global wine community eagerly anticipates the positive impact of his leadership on the future of PFV and the enduring legacy of its member families.
