Argentine winery Catena Zapata has once again claimed the top spot as the world’s most admired wine brand in 2026, according to the sixteenth edition of the ranking published by the British magazine Drinks International on March 26.
Based in Mendoza, the winery also retains its title as the most admired brand in South America, cementing its position as a global benchmark for quality and innovation.
The annual list is compiled from votes by an international academy of sommeliers, wine buyers, wholesalers, Masters of Wine, and specialized journalists. Italy’s Antinori ranks second, gaining two positions from last year and recognized as the most admired European brand. Spain’s Familia Torres completes the podium, appearing in the top three for the third time. The ranking evaluates factors such as wine quality and consistency, value for money, brand strength, marketing strategy, historical legacy, sustainable practices, and corporate social responsibility. For 2026, jury members were allowed more individual votes to ensure broader representation of industry perspectives.
Founded in 1902 by Nicola Catena, Catena Zapata has played a pivotal role in transforming Argentine wine on the international stage. Under the leadership of Laura Catena, the fourth-generation family member, the winery has promoted high-altitude viticulture in the Andes, advanced scientific research through the Catena Institute of Wine, and expanded wine tourism with the opening of the Angélica Cocina Maestra restaurant. Its Malbec and Chardonnay wines continue to receive high international scores, reinforcing its global reputation.
Antinori, with family roots dating back to 1385 in Florence, is renowned for pioneering the “Super Tuscan” movement with wines like Tignanello. Today, it operates multiple wineries across Italy and abroad. Familia Torres, established in 1870 in Catalonia, has led innovations in technical winemaking, environmental sustainability, and the preservation of native grape varieties.
The 2026 ranking reflects a strong European presence, with 36 of the 50 selected brands coming from the continent. France (14), Spain (13), and Italy (8) are the most represented countries, while top brands from other regions include Australia’s Penfolds (6th), South Africa’s Kanonkop, the United States’ Ridge, and Chilean representatives Concha y Toro and Errázuriz. Methodological updates this year allowed sparkling wine producers outside France, such as Codorníu and Nyetimber (UK), to enter the list, with Nyetimber debuting at 29.
According to Shay Waterworth, editor of Drinks International, being named number one is “exceptional” and a testament to the combination of tradition, innovation, and consistent quality. The 2026 edition consolidates Catena Zapata as a global leader while showcasing how family-run wineries can enhance both international recognition and local development.
