Almansa DO Wine Sales Rise in 2024 Amid Strong Export Growth and Premium Positioning

The Almansa Designation of Origin (DO) closed 2024 with a 1.25% increase in total wine sales value, reaching over EUR 13 million, affirming its steady upward trend in both domestic and international markets.

This performance underscores growing confidence in the quality and market adaptability of wines from this southeastern Spanish region.

Exports Drive Growth

Exports accounted for approximately 70% of Almansa DO's total sales in 2024, contributing over EUR 9.4 million, while the Spanish domestic market generated EUR 3.5 million. This continued international demand reinforces Almansa DO's reputation abroad, particularly in markets known for seeking distinctive, high-quality wines.

Canada led all importing countries with purchases totaling EUR 2.6 million, followed by Germany (EUR 1 million) and Finland (EUR 709,000). The Netherlands and the United States also ranked among the top five destinations. While growth in China slowed, the increase in exports to North America and Europe more than offset this shortfall.

Premium Positioning and Organic Advantage

One of the most notable indicators of progress was the over 30% increase in the average price per hectoliter, suggesting that Almansa wines are increasingly positioned as premium offerings. This shift reflects not only improvements in wine quality but also a clear alignment with international consumer trends, particularly a demand for authenticity, sustainability, and oenological excellence.

In European markets like Germany, organic certifications played a pivotal role in boosting both visibility and value, highlighting the DO’s responsiveness to evolving global standards.

Leadership and Outlook

Adolfo Cano, president of the Almansa DO, emphasized that these results reflect the continuation of a positive trajectory established in recent years. Despite market uncertainty in specific regions like China, he noted strong resilience and momentum in key regions, especially in Europe and the United States.

Looking ahead to 2025, Cano expressed measured optimism, acknowledging some concerns over the evolution of the North American market but reaffirming the region’s focus on international expansion and premium quality.

Strategic Focus for 2025

The Almansa DO remains committed to:

  • Enhancing international brand visibility
  • Expanding into high-value markets
  • Maintaining rigorous quality standards
  • Leveraging organic and sustainable certifications

With its blend of tradition, innovation, and strategic focus, Almansa DO is set to further consolidate its position in global wine markets, reaffirming its role as one of Spain's emerging wine success stories.
