Aldi Sustainable Wine Package

Aldi Becomes First UK Supermarket to Remove Foil Capsules from Own-Label Wines

Aldi is making a significant move towards sustainability by eliminating the protective sleeves covering the corks of its own-label wines, a decision the retailer claims is a first among UK supermarkets.

Following a successful trial that began in March 2024, the discount supermarket giant will fully implement the change across its range of corked wines by the end of 2025.

The initiative is expected to eliminate approximately 38 tonnes of unnecessary packaging annually, as the sleeves—typically made from a combination of aluminium and plastic—are removed. Aldi's commitment to this eco-friendly adjustment aligns with its broader strategy to reduce packaging waste and improve sustainability across its product lines.

A Greener Approach to Wine Packaging

The change will apply to 46 different Aldi own-brand wines, including popular selections such as Côtes du Rhône, Rioja Reserva, and Atlantique Rosé. By choosing to sell wines with “naked corks,” Aldi is addressing both environmental concerns and shifting consumer expectations regarding packaging waste.

Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, emphasized the importance of this step:

“We know that sustainability is a priority for our customers, and we’re always looking for new ways to reduce packaging and offer more sustainable choices. Launching wines with naked corks is a step in the right direction, and we’re proud to be the first supermarket to introduce this change across our entire range of own-brand quality corked wines.”

Sustainability Beyond Wine

Aldi has been proactive in sustainability efforts beyond packaging reductions. Earlier in 2024, the retailer partnered with The Hidden Sea to introduce a new own-label Chardonnay with an environmental mission. For every bottle of Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay purchased, the equivalent of ten plastic bottles’ worth of ocean plastic is removed.

By removing foil capsules from its wine range and continuing to support initiatives like ocean plastic removal, Aldi is reinforcing its reputation as a leader in sustainable retail practices. This latest step is part of a broader industry trend towards minimizing unnecessary packaging while maintaining product quality and customer satisfaction.

As Aldi continues to innovate in sustainability, it remains to be seen whether other UK supermarkets will follow suit and adopt similar measures to reduce waste in their wine offerings.
