ProWein: Moldovan Producer Urges Continued Support for Ukraine’s Wine Trade

Purcari Wineries, a Moldovan producer near the Ukrainian border has passionately appealed to consumers to maintain their support for Ukraine’s wine industry amidst ongoing conflict.

Speaking at ProWein, international development manager Remus Turcan emphasized the critical need for solidarity and sustained backing during these challenging times.

The producer’s poignant initiative, the Freedom Blend, was introduced in 2014 as a symbol of solidarity following the Russian Federation’s annexation of Crimea. This blend features grapes from the northern Balkan region, including Georgia’s Saperavi, Moldova’s Rara Neagra, and Ukraine’s Bastardo grapes, all cultivated in Moldova itself.

Recently, a special ‘tribute’ edition of the bottle was launched, featuring a heart-shaped label. Turcan shared that once peace is restored, the original label design will return, symbolizing a return to normalcy.

The producer, located near the Stefan Voda district close to the Ukrainian border, recounted the tense moments during the invasion when there were fears of potential Russian incursion into Moldova. Turcan revealed preparations made with packed cars ready for departure.

Challenges and Resilience

Despite facing numerous challenges, including redirecting exports through Romania due to the conflict, the producer has adapted remarkably well. Turcan highlighted efforts such as supporting children’s education through proceeds from the Freedom Blend sales, and overcoming logistical hurdles by rerouting exports initially planned through Odessa.

He remarked, "As the war started, we readjusted our strategies and shifted operations through Romania. Although prices increased along the supply chain, we optimized processes and fulfilled commitments to our partners."

Humanitarian Efforts and Solidarity

Turcan also shed light on the humanitarian impact, noting that Moldova has provided refuge to over 300,000 Ukrainian refugees. The producer has supported these efforts by offering employment opportunities at their Chateau, vineyard, and head office to more than 100 refugees.

He expressed concern over the toll on Ukrainian lives and the economic strain faced by wineries in Ukraine. Despite challenges, Turcan highlighted the resilience of Ukrainian winemakers, evidenced by their participation at ProWein this year.

Call for Continued Support

In conclusion, Turcan issued a heartfelt plea to consumers worldwide, urging ongoing support for Ukraine and its wine industry throughout the conflict. He emphasized the importance of consumer confidence in demonstrating solidarity with Ukraine, assuring them that their support makes a significant difference during these turbulent times.
