In a significant step forward for cultural and economic diplomacy, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) hosted a special event today at its Tokyo headquarters, highlighting the excellence of Moldovan wines to Japanese audiences.
The event brought together members of the Japanese press, diplomats, and industry representatives in a shared celebration of Moldova’s rich winemaking tradition.
The initiative was followed by a second wine tasting organized by one of Japan’s largest wine importers, drawing 60 distributors, sommeliers, and wine enthusiasts eager to explore the diverse and elegant expressions of Moldovan terroir.
“For Moldovans, wine is about bringing people to the table, having conversations, and sharing emotions. The fact that the Japanese taste our wine with the same feelings shows us that, beyond the distance, we have things in common,” said Ludmila Catlabuga, Moldova’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry. “It is a pride to be here in Tokyo and talk about Moldovan wines.”
Moldovan Wines on the Rise in Japan
Moldova’s presence in the Japanese wine market has grown significantly in recent years. 2024 marks a record-breaking year, with 409,000 liters of Moldovan wine exported to Japan—nearly doubling the 209,000 liters shipped in 2023 and surpassing 2022’s total of 283,000 liters.
The increased demand reflects not only the quality and diversity of Moldovan wines, but also the strategic efforts made by Moldovan authorities to deepen trade relations with Japan.
A New Milestone: Moldova’s National Vine and Wine Office in Tokyo
A major highlight of 2024 was the inauguration of the National Vine and Wine Office of Moldova in Tokyo—a vital move to consolidate Moldova’s wine diplomacy and strengthen its presence in one of Asia’s most competitive and prestigious wine markets.
The new office aims to:
- Coordinate events and tastings in Japan
- Strengthen partnerships with importers and distributors
- Promote Moldova’s wine identity and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) system
- Facilitate consumer education and cultural exchange
Wine as a Bridge Between Cultures
The Tokyo events served not just to showcase wine, but to strengthen people-to-people ties and cultural appreciation between Moldova and Japan. Through the universal language of wine, the two nations continue to build bridges—between continents, traditions, and aspirations.
As Moldovan wine continues to impress discerning Japanese consumers and professionals alike, it becomes clear that this growing partnership is as much about shared taste as it is about shared vision.
