The Republic of Moldova is set to host the World Vine and Wine Congress for the first time—a landmark event that will place the country in the international spotlight.
Organized annually by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), the 46th edition of the Congress will take place from June 16 to 20 at the Palace of the Republic in Chișinău.
Gathering delegates from 51 member countries, the Congress is the most prestigious global forum for the wine industry, bringing together scientists, winemakers, enologists, policymakers, and producers to discuss the sector’s future. The central theme for 2024 is “Shaping the Future of Wine: Embracing Resilience, Enhancing Value, Encouraging Innovation”—a clear reflection of the industry’s current challenges and ambitions.
OIV Director General John Barker emphasized the urgency and relevance of this theme:
“The wine sector must focus on three essential pillars: resilience in the face of climate and economic challenges, value through authenticity and quality, and innovation to meet the demands of a dynamic market.”
A Platform for Dialogue and Scientific Exchange
The event will feature more than 300 presentations on critical topics for the wine sector and will serve as a global intellectual hub. Four major scientific panels will anchor the Congress:
- Viticulture: Resilient practices for sustainable ecosystems
- Oenology: Adaptive and innovative technologies for sustainable winemaking
- Economy & Law: Value creation through resilient business models and value chains
- Safety & Health: Nutrition and wellness in the context of wine
Approximately 150 experts and researchers are expected to participate in panel discussions, offering cutting-edge insights on current and future developments in viticulture and oenology.
Celebrating Moldovan Wine Heritage
Beyond the scientific agenda, international delegates will be invited to explore Moldova’s rich winemaking culture. The Congress includes winery tours, wine tastings, and networking events, providing a platform to showcase Moldova’s unique terroir and winemaking advancements.
Ștefan Iamandi, Director of the National Office of Vine and Wine (ONVV), highlighted the importance of hosting the Congress:
“It’s a unique opportunity to showcase Moldova’s winemaking tradition and progress. It allows us to learn from the best, share our climate adaptation strategies, and modern production practices.”
Iamandi added that the Congress will elevate Moldova’s profile in the global wine industry, stimulate new partnerships, and reaffirm the country’s position on the map of high-quality wine producers.
Moldova's Growing Role in the Global Wine Community
Moldova has been a member of the OIV since April 3, 2001, becoming the first post-Soviet state to join the organization. In 2024, the OIV celebrates its 100th anniversary, and the Moldovan Congress will symbolically launch the organization’s second centenary.
As an OIV member, Moldova gains access to research grants, opportunities to collaborate with international scientists, and exposure to advanced technologies in viticulture and oenology. This is seen as a strategic advantage for strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of the national wine sector.
The Congress is jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry and the National Office of Vine and Wine, confirming Moldova’s commitment to sustainable and innovation-driven wine production.
Conclusion
Hosting the World Vine and Wine Congress is more than a prestigious event for Moldova—it is a turning point. By gathering global expertise and highlighting its own traditions and innovations, Moldova aims to cement its place as a respected player in the future of the wine industry.
