“Best of Upper Austria” Wine Gala 2025 Highlights the Region’s Rising Wine Scene

Upper Austria’s growing reputation as an emerging wine region was firmly cemented during the second edition of the “Best of Upper Austria” wine gala, where the state's best wines were honored in front of producers, professionals, and enthusiasts.

Held under the initiative of Genussland OÖ and led by State Councilor for Agriculture Michaela Langer-Weninger, the gala celebrated a remarkable increase in submissions and highlighted the progress in Upper Austrian viticulture.

Record Participation Reflects Rising Recognition

This year, 158 wines from 23 winemakers were submitted for the Upper Austrian State Wine Awards, marking a 42% increase compared to the inaugural edition in 2023. The growing number of participants signals both increased interest in regional wines and heightened quality standards across the board.

According to Councilor Langer-Weninger, the wines of Upper Austria are gaining attention far beyond state borders:

“Upper Austrian wine reflects not only the flavor of our region and the character of our grape varieties but also the pioneering spirit and passion of our winemakers. They’ve brought Upper Austria out of the shadow of Austria’s major wine-growing areas.”

Winners in 13 Categories

A jury of 12 experts from wine journalism, gastronomy, and trade evaluated the entries using a 20-point system. The winners were announced across 13 categories, showcasing an impressive diversity of styles and varietals. Among the 2025 winners were:

  • Rosé Frizzante Muscat Bleu – Kronbergerhof Rothmeier
  • Sekt Austria Reserve Extra Brut – Weingut Aichinger
  • Grüner Veltliner 2023 – Schiefermair Wein
  • Chardonnay Klassik 2024 – Nußböckgut Velechovsky
  • Gemischter Satz Granit-Terrassen 2024 – Der Manfred & die Seinen
  • Solaris Süßwein 2023 – Schiefermair Wein

These winning wines showcase the varietal versatility and innovation that characterize Upper Austrian wine today.

Viticulture on the Rise

Currently, the region cultivates around 100 hectares of vineyards—65 hectares for white wine and 35 for red. The area under vine is steadily expanding, with 10 additional hectares planned for 2025. Grüner Veltliner, with 12 hectares, remains the most planted variety.

Climatic shifts are creating new opportunities, particularly for reds and aromatic whites. As Councilor Langer-Weninger noted:

“The changing climate is opening up new opportunities for us—from Grüner Veltliner to red wines. Upper Austria is gaining profile and importance as a wine-growing region.”

Collaboration Fuels Growth

The continued success of Upper Austrian wine is supported by strong cooperation between Genussland OÖ, the Upper Austrian Winegrowers' Association, and the Upper Austrian Chamber of Agriculture. President Franz Waldenberger praised the diversity of grape varieties—more than 70 are cultivated—as a key advantage for the region:

“As a small wine-growing area, we offer tremendous variety. Many wine lovers recognize this and are increasingly choosing regional wines. The development and quality are impressive.”

A Bright Future for Upper Austrian Wine

With innovation, climate adaptability, and community support, Upper Austria is well on its way to establishing itself as a distinctive and respected wine region in Austria and beyond. The success of the 2025 gala not only celebrates past accomplishments but sets the stage for future growth.
