The SoWine agency, in collaboration with Dynata, has presented the results of its 2025 barometer on alcohol consumption in France.
According to data collected in December 2024, wine continues to be the preferred alcoholic beverage among the French for the second consecutive year. However, subtle shifts in drinking habits have emerged, reflecting evolving consumer preferences.
Wine Maintains Its Lead, But with a Slight Decline
The study, conducted with a representative sample of 1,002 people aged 18 to 65, found that 58% of respondents identified wine as their favorite alcoholic drink. Despite retaining its top position, this figure marks a two-point decrease from the previous year. Beer follows closely behind at 56%, also experiencing a similar decline. Champagne (35%), cocktails (27%), and cider (25%) complete the ranking of preferred alcoholic beverages.
Young Adults Show Increasing Interest in Wine
Notably, wine consumption among younger demographics is on the rise. Among individuals aged 18-25, 45% now consider wine their beverage of choice, reflecting a significant six-point increase compared to 2024. This trend suggests that younger consumers are increasingly appreciating wine, possibly influenced by evolving lifestyle choices, wine education, and marketing efforts targeting this age group.
The Rise of Abstinence, Particularly Among Women
At the same time, the percentage of people who abstain from alcohol has grown, with 17% of respondents declaring themselves non-drinkers. This represents a three-point increase from 2020, indicating a gradual shift toward more moderate drinking habits. The trend is even more pronounced among women, with abstinence rates rising by six points to reach 23% this year. Health consciousness, wellness trends, and a growing preference for alcohol-free alternatives may be contributing factors to this shift.
White Wine Leads Consumption Preferences
When examining wine preferences, white wine remains the most consumed variety, with 91% of respondents stating they drink it, an increase of one point from the previous year. White wine is primarily enjoyed during meals (50%) and aperitifs (33%), highlighting its versatility. Champagne remains highly popular, with 87% of participants consuming it, though it has experienced a slight two-point decline. Similarly, rosé wine, at 85%, has also registered a minor drop of two points compared to 2024.
Red Wine Experiences a Resurgence
Unlike other wine types, red wine has seen a resurgence in popularity. With 84% of respondents drinking it, red wine consumption has risen by two points compared to the previous year. This type of wine remains strongly associated with meals, being selected by 78% of participants. The renewed interest in red wine may be attributed to its traditional role in French gastronomy, perceived health benefits, and evolving consumer tastes.
Conclusion: A Changing Landscape for Alcohol Consumption
While wine continues to dominate France’s alcohol market, the 2025 SoWine barometer highlights a dynamic landscape where shifting trends—such as increasing abstinence, growing interest from younger drinkers, and changing wine preferences—play an influential role. As consumers become more conscious of their drinking habits, the industry may need to adapt to these evolving patterns, offering new experiences and alternatives to cater to a diverse audience.
