Moldova Wine Industry 2026: Premium Products Offset Export Headwinds

Moldova’s wine sector entered 2026 facing a more difficult global trading environment, yet recent export statistics indicate that the industry is becoming increasingly resilient through value-driven growth.

According to the latest Marketing Intelligence report from the National Office of Vine and Wine (ONVV), wine and related beverage exports totaled USD 85.0 million between January and May 2026, while export volumes reached 45.7 million liters.

Although export quantities declined considerably compared to the previous year, revenues remained relatively stable, highlighting a structural shift in the way Moldovan producers compete internationally.

Less Volume, Better Returns

Historically, export success was often measured by the number of liters shipped abroad. Today, a different metric is gaining importance: value per liter.

The 2026 figures demonstrate this transformation. While overall export volume contracted by 18%, export value decreased by only 4%, indicating improved average pricing across several categories.

For many wineries, this reflects years of investment in quality improvements, branding, packaging, and market positioning.

Bottled Products Drive Export Value

The strongest results were observed in categories where bottled products play a central role.

Liqueur wines recorded impressive growth, supported by increasing demand for packaged offerings. Similarly, bottled divin exports experienced exceptional expansion, contributing significantly to overall export revenues.

These trends suggest that international buyers are increasingly seeking premium, ready-to-market products rather than bulk shipments intended for repackaging elsewhere.

Divin Strengthens Moldova’s International Reputation

One of the most remarkable developments in 2026 is the continued rise of Moldova’s divin sector.

Export revenues from divin and brandy products increased by more than 40%, reinforcing the category’s role as a strategic export asset. The rapid growth of bottled exports demonstrates the success of efforts to position Moldovan divin as a premium product in international markets.

As global consumers continue exploring distinctive spirits from emerging regions, Moldova appears well positioned to capitalize on this opportunity.

Market Diversification Remains Essential

Moldovan wines and spirits reached 61 countries during the reporting period. However, more than four-fifths of export activity remained concentrated within the ten largest markets.

Romania maintained its position as the dominant destination, while Poland, Czechia, the United States, Nigeria, and the Netherlands also contributed significantly.

Although these markets provide valuable commercial opportunities, further expansion into new regions could help reduce risk and create additional growth avenues.

Industry Outlook

The latest export results point toward a maturing wine industry increasingly focused on profitability rather than volume alone.

Challenges remain, particularly in sparkling and aromatized wine categories. Nevertheless, the success of bottled wines, liqueur wines, and divin demonstrates that Moldovan producers are adapting effectively to evolving consumer demand.

If the current premiumization trend continues, Moldova may emerge stronger from the current market slowdown, with a more diversified portfolio and greater recognition as a producer of high-quality wines and spirits.
