The Moldovan wine sector has experienced a dynamic and challenging first eight months of 2025.
According to official export data, the total export volume of wine and related products (bulk and bottled) reached 81.27 million liters, marking a 13% decline compared to the same period in 2024. Despite this drop in volume, the export value stood at USD 138.59 million, down only 6% year-on-year, suggesting that the industry continues to benefit from value-driven markets and a gradual trend toward premiumization.
Key Highlights of Export Performance
- Global Reach: Moldovan wines were exported to 65 countries worldwide. The top 10 destinations accounted for 81% of export value and 82% of export volume, highlighting a concentration in core markets.
-
Still Wines:
Representing the largest share of exports, still wines generated USD 88.7 million (+6%) despite a 9% decline in volume. Bottled still wines showed a modest increase in value (+1%), with average export prices rising to USD 1.98 per bottle (+11%), reflecting stronger demand for higher-value segments. Bulk wine exports fell in volume (-13%) but gained +11% in average price per liter. -
Sparkling Wines:
Sparkling exports remained stable with a 3% increase in value and a slight 4% drop in volume. Average prices rose by 7%, reaching USD 2.26 per bottle, showing a clear market appreciation for quality sparkling wines from Moldova. -
Fortified Wines (Dessert Wines):
The standout performer of 2025 so far, fortified wines surged by +63% in value and +35% in volume, with bottled exports nearly doubling. This niche category is rapidly expanding, supported by growing international curiosity for Moldova’s traditional fortified styles. -
Divin (Moldovan Brandy):
Moldova’s iconic brandy performed strongly, with exports totaling USD 32.4 million (+10%). Bottled brandy rose slightly in value (+3%) and more significantly in volume (+4%), while bulk brandy showed robust growth, increasing by +13% in value and +7% in volume. Average prices also rose by +6%, consolidating brandy’s position as a premium export product.
Outlook for the Moldovan Wine Industry
The first eight months of 2025 underline a paradox: while overall volumes are shrinking, the value resilience shows a shift toward premium segments and diversification of categories. The growth in fortified wines and brandy contrasts with the struggles of aromatized wines, and the steady performance of still and sparkling wines demonstrates Moldova’s adaptability in a challenging global market.
The ability to sustain export values despite declining volumes is an encouraging sign, pointing to Moldova’s growing reputation as a producer of quality wines and spirits in international markets.
