Weingut Eichberger from Weinviertel, Austria, is a shining example of how passion, perseverance, and a deep respect for nature can shape an exceptional winery.
Situated in the southern Weinviertel, the estate has a rich history that is deeply intertwined with the land it cultivates and the family that nurtures it. From its agricultural beginnings to becoming a renowned name in Austrian viticulture, the Eichberger family has continuously evolved, blending tradition with modernity to create outstanding wines.
A Family Legacy Rooted in Change
The origins of Weingut Eichberger can be traced back to a significant turning point in the family's history. When Gotthard Eichberger Sr. married into the family, he took over a farm that had been managed by four daughters after their parents passed away at a young age. For many years, agriculture was the primary focus, with viticulture playing only a secondary role. However, in 1991, Gotthard Eichberger Jr. made a bold decision to shift the farm’s focus entirely to winemaking. Exchanging fields for vineyards, he laid the foundation for what would become a distinguished and innovative winery.

Preserving Terroir and Tradition
Today, the Eichberger family—Gotthard, Doris, and their children Julia and Marcus—remain dedicated to preserving the unique characteristics of their single vineyards and the Weinviertel region as a whole. They primarily cultivate traditional grape varieties, with a special focus on Grüner Veltliner. This versatile variety is expressed in multiple styles, from light and refreshing wines to complex, single-vineyard selections that showcase the distinctive terroir of their land. The family firmly believes that balancing tradition with modern winemaking techniques, while continuously striving for improvement, is the key to excellence.
A Deep Connection to the Land
Sustainability is at the core of Weingut Eichberger’s philosophy. Working across generations, the family embraces a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes the health of the soil and environment. The loess soils in the region, deposited by the west winds during the Ice Age, provide an excellent foundation for viticulture. These fine-grained sediments not only contribute to the elegant fruitiness of the wines but also retain water and nutrients, making the vines more resistant to drought—an increasingly crucial advantage in times of climate change.
The vineyards benefit from an exceptional microclimate, with warm days and cool nights fostering optimal ripening conditions. This contrast enhances the aromatic complexity and spicy nuances that are hallmarks of Weinviertel white wines. The family’s vines grow on a small hill in Putzing and in their home village of Eibesbrunn—two locations where vineyards outnumber the inhabitants. By working with these contrasting sites, Weingut Eichberger beautifully captures the interplay of terroir and climate in each bottle.
Wine Tasting
To truly appreciate the character of Weingut Eichberger’s wines, a curated tasting was held, featuring three standout expressions:
- Pet Nat Filou White: A vibrant and playful Pet Nat (Pétillant Naturel) made from Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Gelber Muskateller. Its lively yellow-gold hue is matched by floral aromas of acacia, ripe apple, pear, and quince. The palate is crisp and fresh, with bright acidity and a long, fruity aftertaste. This naturally sparkling wine is a joyful expression of the winery’s experimental spirit, ideal for light appetizers, fresh salads, or simply celebrating the moment.
- Grüner Veltliner "Ich bin Ich" Weinviertel DAC Reserve 2021: This powerful Grüner Veltliner reflects the best of Weinviertel’s terroir. Light yellow-green with silver reflections, it opens with delicate tobacco spice, subtle honey notes, and hints of quince and white peach. On the palate, it’s juicy, taut, and balanced, with a fine touch of pear and a lingering salty minerality. A perfect companion for pork, lamb, or aged cheese.
- Chardonnay "Ich bin Ich" Große Reserve 2021: An exquisite Chardonnay, crafted with precision and depth. Medium yellow-green in color, its nose offers fine wood spice, vanilla, and notes of bergamot, papaya, and honeydew melon. The palate is complex yet elegant, creamy yet fresh, with a well-integrated acidity and a long, refined finish. A fantastic pairing for creamy pasta dishes, seafood, or soft cheeses.
