The Moser family's association with wine dates back to 1848.
This rich history saw a significant turning point in the 1950s when Dr. hc. Lenz Moser revolutionized viticulture with the development of a high vine-training system.
This innovation marked a new era in grape cultivation, enhancing both the quality and quantity of wine production.
Establishment of Sepp Moser Estate
In the mid-1980s, Lenz Moser's son, Sepp Moser, founded a new estate, Sepp Moser Winery, leveraging the family's vineyards. This new enterprise, unique in Austria, spanned 50 hectares across two distinct wine regions: Kremstal in Lower Austria and Neusiedlersee in Burgenland. Each region contributed to a diverse portfolio of high-quality wines, with expressive and mineralic white wines from the steep, south-exposed terraces of Rohrendorf (Kremstal), and well-structured red wines along with expressive dessert wines (Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese) from the Seewinkel plains east of Lake Neusiedl.
Transition to Biodynamic Cultivation
From 2000 onwards, Sepp’s son Nikolaus and his wife Andrea began the gradual conversion of all vineyards to biodynamic cultivation. By vintage 2009, the wines achieved Demeter certification, reflecting the family's commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices. This shift marked a significant evolution in the Moser family's winemaking approach, emphasizing minimal intervention and a deep respect for the environment.
The Present: Vitikultur MOSER
In 2023, the estate underwent a rebranding, adopting the name Vitikultur MOSER. The current generation, represented by Kathi and her husband Jan, now oversees the vinification process. Their approach is minimalistic, avoiding added yeast or enzymes to preserve the terroir's authentic character. The wines produced are elegant, vivid, and true to their origins, embodying the family’s long-standing philosophy.
Biodynamic Principles and Practices
The Moser family's dedication to biodynamic viticulture stems from their early engagement with pioneers in Alsace. This method not only protects the environment but also regenerates and enhances soil health, leading to wines with genuine and individual character. The philosophy revolves around creating a balanced ecosystem, employing biodynamic preparations like horn manure, horn silica, plant teas, and compost to strengthen vine vitality and resistance.
A Biodynamic Farm Ecosystem
The Moser family’s farm is a vibrant, biodiverse ecosystem. Two Noriker horses plow part of the vineyards, while 30 chickens, housed in a mobile stable among the vines, provide eggs. A small flock of sheep grazes the embankments, promoting a circular economy within the farm. This integration of animals and biodynamic practices creates a sustainable and harmonious environment, away from the monoculture of conventional wine production.
