Vitikultur MOSER, formerly Sepp Moser Winery, has long been synonymous with innovation and tradition in Austrian winemaking.
Rooted in a family legacy dating back to the mid-1980s, the estate is now spearheading the natural wine movement with its captivating Pet Nat wines. These sparkling wines perfectly encapsulate the Moser family’s commitment to biodynamic viticulture and their philosophy of producing wines that are as pure and vibrant as the terroirs they hail from.
A Legacy of Excellence
In the mid-1980s, Sepp Moser, son of Lenz Moser, established the Sepp Moser Winery, creating a groundbreaking enterprise that united two of Austria’s most esteemed wine regions: Kremstal in Lower Austria and Neusiedlersee in Burgenland. These 50 hectares of vineyards became the foundation for an impressive portfolio of wines. Kremstal’s steep, south-exposed terraces produced expressive, mineral-driven white wines, while Neusiedlersee’s Seewinkel plains yielded structured reds and the region’s signature dessert wines such as Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese.
In the last few decades, Niki Moser laid the foundation for sustainable excellence by converting the vineyards to biodynamic viticulture, fostering a deeper connection between the vines and their environment. Building on this legacy, Kathi Moser and her husband, Jan, are taking a minimalistic approach to winemaking, refining techniques to allow the vineyard’s natural essence to shine. Together with Niki, they craft not only exceptional natural wines but focus primarily on single-vineyard expressions that honor their unique terroir and deep-rooted heritage.
In 2023, the estate underwent a transformation, rebranding as Vitikultur MOSER under the leadership of Kathi Moser and her husband, Jan.
What Makes Pet Nat Special?
Pet Nat, short for Pétillant Naturel, refers to a sparkling wine made using the ancient method, a process that predates the méthode champenoise. Unlike traditional sparkling wines, Pet Nat is bottled before fermentation is complete, creating natural carbonation.
Vitikultur MOSER’s Pet Nat wines embody this raw and authentic style. They forego the addition of yeast, enzymes, or other additives, allowing the wine to reflect the true character of the vineyard. The result is a series of sparkling wines with vibrant energy, delicate complexity, and a strong sense of place.
- Pet Nat Rosé 2024 (Riesling, Blaufränkisch, Sauvignon Blanc): Salmon-colored rosé, with its subtle natural haze, is as inviting as it is intriguing. At first, it reveals a delicate reductive quality, which softens over time to reveal enchanting aromas of dried blossoms and fresh plums. The palate offers a delightful medley of flavors: a burst of rosehips, the tang of sour cherries, and the gentle sweetness of dried apples. The wine’s beautifully embedded acidity ties these elements together, while the elegant mousseux adds depth and highlights its complexity and expressive character.
- Pet Nat White 2024 (Riesling, Muskat Ottonel, Sauvignon Blanc): This bright straw yellow sparkling wine, with a charming hint of cloudiness, offers an inviting bouquet of acacia blossoms, meadow flowers, and a delicate touch of fresh hay. On the palate, it delights with the luscious flavor of juicy pears, their texture recalling a finely rough skin. Subtle notes of roasted pineapple add a caramelized sweetness, balanced by a gentle hint of dried meadow herbs. The velvety mousse enhances its invigorating character, while its cheerful acidity brings a lively freshness. The finish is elegant, fading slowly and leaving a lasting impression.
Food Pairing
Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with culinary delights, this Pet Nat Rosé shines. Try it with salmon tartar accented by capers, dill, and lemon sauce, or pair with melted goat’s cheese topped with rosehip jam or chutney for an unforgettable taste experience.
Perfect as an aperitif, this Pet Nat White also pairs wonderfully with canapés, like pears with melted blue cheese and almonds, or the indulgence of brioche topped with foie gras and roasted pears.
Biodynamic Viticulture at Its Core
The MOSER family’s commitment to biodynamic practices stems from early inspiration from pioneers in Alsace. By focusing on a balanced ecosystem, the team uses preparations such as horn manure, plant teas, and compost to enhance soil vitality and vine resilience. This approach ensures the vineyards remain healthy and regenerative, producing wines that are truly reflective of their terroir.
A Sparkling Future
Under Kathi and Jan’s guidance, Vitikultur MOSER continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. Their Pet Nat wines are a testament to the winery’s dedication to sustainability, authenticity, and the art of winemaking. Whether enjoyed as an aperitif or paired with exquisite culinary creations, these sparkling gems are a celebration of nature’s brilliance.
